No Follow Your Own Blog Pages for Better PR

Nofollow is an attribute used in HTML to tell the search engine to follow the links or not, to give credit to links or not. It stops crawler if you have used this attribute at a link and crawler won’t escape from that link and it won’t give page rank to that link you have nofollowed. its used like the following.

If you have used external links in the site then it is wise to target blank to them and nofollow them. If you don’t use nofollow then it means that you are giving credit to the external site or link and you will increase the external link’s PR and decrease yours. What I am saying here is to nofollow some of your own pages. Yes, some pages in your blog, website do not need the Page Rank or credit or link juice or PR juice or whatever it is.

How about contact page, privacy policy page, faqs page, possibly about page and pages like these? Do you need that these pages need PR. Your website index page need Page Rank and important articles in your website or blog need PR. So open your header or footer file and add rel nofollow attribute in these links which go to these pages and chances are your website PR will be better.

Use Google Analytics to monitor your site’s reach or any other analytical program but how you can compare sites which are not yours? Google trends enables you to see exact reach of any site and its comparative reach with other sites. Here is how it is.

Go to http://trends.google.com/trends?hl=en

Type or Paste the URLs (in following format) of sites you want to compare and see their reach. e.g.

engadget.com, mashable.com, techcrunch.com

Hit search trends button. You will get bars and graphs to show you how much reach any site has got in some countries including United States, United Kingdom, India, Canada, Indonesia, Germany, Australia, Malaysia, Philippines, South Africa.

The above comparison is of my favorite sites. This gives you which website is hitting more in any country related to any other similar site. If you have got some websites of your own or blogs, you can compare their relative reach in the same way easily using this method.

Correct Way To Use Robots.txt File

Suppose You want to Disallow two directories at your website i.e. some-directory and another-directory located at:

http://www.yourwebsite.com/some-directory
http://www.yourwebsite.com/another-directory

to be crawled by search engines and Allow all other directories and page of whole website to be indexed and crawled then here is how to do it in a right way.

Wrong Way

This is wrong way of creating a robots.txt file for your server for above requirement.

User-agent: *
Disallow: /some-directory/
Disallow: /another-directory/

In above example: You disallowed two directories but you did not allow anything other than that at all.

Correct Way

User-agent: *
Disallow: /some-directory/
Disallow: /another-directory/
Allow: /

In above example you just disallowed desired two directories and allowed all other website directories and pages.

This confusion about the code is very common. We generally read for robots.txt file and get the code and add * and mention what to disallow and upload the file.

To allow all the website for all search engines and all their crawlers (A search engine may own more than one crawler or bot for different tasks) here is the code:

User-agent: *
Allow: /

Google Webmaster Tools are very helpful in doing right thing what your website deserves. From there you can generate robots.txt file by choosing some options. I would recommend Google Webmaster Tools to every webmaster.

Robots File – Usage and Best Practices

A robots.txt file restricts or allow Search Engine Robots (known as “bots”) that crawl the web. These bots are automated, and before they access pages of a site, they check to see if a robots.txt file exists that prevents or allow them from accessing certain pages. If you do not put a robots.txt file in your website root directory (/public_html or www) then in log files there will be a warning that you have not robots file in your website root whenever a crawler will visit your web pages. So its necessary to use Robots file and to use it in a right way.

How to create a robots.txt file

This example allows all robots to visit all files because the wildcard “*” specifies all robots:

User-agent: *
Disallow:

This example keeps all robots out. No robot will visit your site and your pages will not be indexed by search engines:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /

The next is an example that tells all crawlers not to enter into four directories of a website:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /cgi-bin/
Disallow: /images/
Disallow: /tmp/
Disallow: /private/

Example that tells all crawlers not to enter one specific file:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /directory/file.html

Crawl-delay directive

Several major crawlers support a Crawl-delay parameter, set to the number of seconds to wait between successive requests to the same server:

User-agent: *
Crawl-delay: 10

Allow Directive

Allow file but disallow folder containing file, for example:

Allow: /folder1/myfile.html
Disallow: /folder1/

Extended Standard

An Extended Standard for Robot Exclusion has been proposed, which adds several new directives, such as Visit-time and Request-rate. For example:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /downloads/
Request-rate: 1/5         # maximum rate is one page every 5 seconds
Visit-time: 0600-0845     # only visit between 06:00 and 08:45 UTC (GMT)
